The company may conduct its first human trial in 2026. In September 2024, Blindsight received breakthrough device designation from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA). This designation is given to devices that show promise in treating serious or life-threatening diseases.
Elon Musk announced on social media platform X in March 2025 that the blindsight implant was working in monkeys. He said that the image quality will be low initially, but in the future, it may exceed that of normal human eyes. According to Musk, the first implants could be implanted in completely blind people by early 2026, giving them limited, but still limited, vision.
Neuralink will start high-volume production of brain-computer interface devices and move to a streamlined, almost entirely automated surgical procedure in 2026.

Blindsight works by connecting directly to the brain’s visual cortex. Musk claims that even people with completely damaged eyes and optic nerves will be able to see with this technology, provided their visual cortex is not damaged. People blind from birth can also benefit from it.
In January 2026, Musk announced that Neuralink is now preparing to begin mass production of a brain-computer interface device, and that in the future, surgery will be fully automated. He also said that the device’s ultra-thin threads can penetrate the brain without removing the outer membrane (dura), which is a major technological breakthrough.
Initially, Blindsight may have a resolution similar to that of older Atari video games. However, in the future, it may also enable the ability to see wavelengths such as infrared, ultraviolet and radar. Something similar to the Star Trek character Geordie La Forge.
