pRevocation of the ‘no detention’ policy for junior and eighth graders will help in increasing the interest of children in learning and writing, there is no consensus on this yet but it is believed that writing and learning in schools Apart from other factors, this policy has also played a significant role in the decline of With the end of this policy, the children who do not get pass marks in the annual examinations of fifth and eighth will now be given another chance within two months. The central government has abolished this policy in all schools under its jurisdiction like Kendriya Vidyalayas, Navodaya Vidyalayas, Sainik Schools and Central Government Institutions.
Undoubtedly, this is an important decision of the central government but it would be good if the information about the effects of the policy of not failing the students is shared. It is true that the meaning of education is not limited to passing exams but it should be measured in relation to the indicators of overall personality development of the child, but in this case it is understood that schools with ‘no detention’ policy There has been a decline in the standard of education and this undermines efforts to create a learning environment in the classrooms. It has been clarified that no student can be expelled from the school on the ground of not getting passing marks in the examination.
The central government has brought a change in this policy through the amendment in the Right to Education Act. After this, the states have been given the right to cancel or retain the policy of not failing children who do not get passing marks in the annual examinations. At present the situation is that 16 states and two union territories have abolished the ‘no detention’ policy; Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh have decided to continue this policy. Haryana and Puducherry are yet to decide on this. The condition of the standard of education in the government schools of Punjab is not much different from the general condition of the country, but in this case the Punjab government will also need to take a proper decision after considering its level. The government should consult education experts, teachers, parents and civil society organizations related to education before arriving at any conclusion. Only time will tell how much the abolition of the ‘no detention’ policy will improve the learning environment in schools, but many more conditions need to be fulfilled to make the school student-centric.
