Entry of AI traffic technology like America in India, smart signals will be installed in Goa and Chennai, relief from traffic jam

AI traffic signals in North Carolina, USA have caught the attention of the whole world. Now India has also moved in this direction. Soon AI based smart traffic signals will be installed in Chennai, the capital of Goa and Tamil Nadu, which aims to reduce traffic jams of cities and reduce travel time.

Large scale preparations in Goa and Chennai

Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant has announced that AI traffic signals will be installed at 91 places in the state. At the same time, this smart system will be applicable at 165 major intersections in Chennai. In the first phase, signals will be installed on Chennai’s Anna Salai, Jawaharlal Nehru Salai, Sardar Patel Road, Kamrajar Salai, Rajaji Salai and Tellers Road.

How will these AI traffic signals work?

AI signals are different from traditional traffic lights in many ways. This system works in 3 major parts:

  1. Sensor on the road – Monitor speed and traffic flow of vehicles.

  2. Ai camera – Counting of vehicles, directions and vehicle types (cars, bikes etc.) are identified.

  3. Control unit – By processing the information received from cameras and sensors, it adjusts the time of signal in real-time.

If the traffic is reduced, the green light will be available quickly, while the signal time will be extended if there is more crowd. This time can change between 30 and 120 seconds.

Emergency and VIP movement also beneficial

Although this system will be completely automatic, the police will also manually control, so that ambulances, fire brigades or VIP convoys can be given priority.

What is ‘Green Corridor’ scheme?

Chennai Traffic Police plans to prepare ‘Green Corridor’ by connecting all the signals with a central system. With this, green lights will continue to be available on the main roads of the city, so that travel can be done without stopping.

The initial trial was successful

Trial of this system is going on at 6 intersections of EVR Salai in Chennai and the initial results have been quite positive. People believe that traffic jam has now decreased significantly compared to earlier and the time to reach office or home has decreased.
