New Delhi, January 6

A delegation of protesting farmers on the Khanuri border between Punjab and Haryana will meet the Supreme Court appointed High Empowered Committee at around 3 pm today. Among the protesting farmers is 70-year-old Jagjit Singh Dallewal, who has been on a death fast for the past 40 days and the Punjab government is on alert and the apex court is monitoring him due to concerns about his health.

Senior advocate Kapil Sibal, appearing for the Punjab government, informed the bench of Justice Suryakant and Justice N Kotishwar Singh that they have been successful in persuading the protesting farmers to meet Justice (retd) Nawab Singh who is the chairman of the committee. Sibal said, “We have succeeded in persuading them. Please adjourn the matter to another day. We hope for some success.”

On this, the bench said, “Hope everyone will come to their senses.” The apex court asked Sibal to prepare a brief note on the deliberations and adjourned the hearing to January 10.

Appearing for the Centre, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta said that the committee will enter a brief note on the outcome of the meeting. Justice Suryakant agreed to this and said that it is hoped that the committee will file a note. -News-Patiala
