Donald Trump will take the oath of the presidency on January 20, but even before that, the colleges there are facing strange concerns. Many colleges have advised foreign students to return to campus immediately. This will also affect Indian students studying in America. Students are being asked to return to college as soon as possible. The reason for this is the fear of travel ban.
CNN reports that colleges believe that travel bans from many countries could be imposed if Trump is returned to power. Due to this, foreign students can get stuck. It mentions Muslim majority countries like Iran, Libya, Iraq, Sudan, Somalia, Syria, Yemen. It is being said that anti-American and anti-Semitic people can have their visas revoked. China and India are currently not Trump’s targets. Still, universities are cautious. A report from Cornell University claims that China and India can be added to this list. That is why Indians are most concerned.
How many Indian students in America?
More than 11 lakh foreign students are studying in America. Out of these 3.3 lakh students are Indians. The Ministry of Education, Government of India recently shared a report, according to which the number of Indian students in prestigious institutions like MIT, Stanford, Harvard and UC Berkeley has increased by 91 percent. In 2019, there were 122,535 Indian students in the US, but now this number has increased to 3.3 lakh.
Order to all students
According to the report, the University of Southern California has issued an order for all students in the wake of travel ban fears. Foreign students in particular have been asked to return to the campus immediately. More than 17000 foreign students study in this university. Academics say that the kind of fear that exists suggests that Trump will keep a close eye on university activities.
