Tokyo Olympic Games silver medal winner Meerabai Chanu was elected the chairperson of the Indian Wet Lifting Federation (IWLF) athletes commission on Tuesday 15 April. Training started from Imphal

Chanu’s full name is Sikhom Meerabai Chanu. Born on 8 August 1994 in Nongpok, Manipur, Manipur comes from an ordinary family. His father worked in the Public Works Department (PWD) and his mother used to run a small shop.

From a young age, Meerabai used to pick up heavy firewood, it was shocking for her family and neighbors. Chanu was 4 years younger than her brother but she used to pick up more wood than her brother, it started the dream of weightlifting.

He started training in weightlifting at Khuman Lampak Sports Complex in Imphal. Meera’s training and coach was a famous weightlifting coach Vijay Sharma.

Took inspiration from Kunjarani Devi

Meerabai Chanu soon inspired India’s most successful female weightlifting Kunjarani Devi. Chanu gained fame out of the country at the age of 20 when he won the silver medal in the 48kg category in the 2014 Commonwealth Sports in Scotland.

Meerabai has also been a world champion

She missed the medal in the Paris Olympic 2024. The 31 -year -old Meerabai missed the medal due to weakness when the periods came during this competition. He is also a former World Champion, who won Gold in the 48 kg category at the World Championship in 2017 and lifted a total of 194 kg. The silver medal was won in 2022. Meerabai has won three gold and one silver medal at the Commonwealth Championship.

She could not play due to hip injury during the 2023 Commonwealth Games. Earlier in 2016, he qualified for a 12 -year national record breaking, despite the Olympic injuries and defeat, he made a strong comeback.
