Google Warning To Users: Google has issued a warning for its users. There has been a new and extremely dangerous cyber attack on Gmail users, using the technical flaws of the platform as well as clever social engineering techniques. After this attack, there was a flood of rumors on social media and Google had to release security updates immediately. The company has clearly stated that now stop using passwords.
What is the whole matter
Indeed, the attack took place on an Etreum Developer Nick Johnson, who fell victim to a complex fishing attack. He said that he received a valid email from Google, which said that a legal notice has been issued on his account. This email came from No-Reply@google.com and looked completely real, Dkim signature was also valid and Gmail showed it as a general safety alert.
In fact, the hackers took advantage of the flaws of Google’s system and sent the emails like real and then forwarded it to others. The aim was to steal login credentials from the user.
Google replied
The company said, “We are aware of such targeted attacks and we have been implementing security measures for it since last week.” Google has advised users to use passkey instead of passwords as the passki is linked to the user’s device and it is impossible to access the account of that device without.
Why is it necessary
In today’s time, password and even SMS based two-factor authentication (2FA) can be easily hacked. Attackers can login from any device by stealing passwords and then SMS code from the user. But Paski works only when an account is opened with the safety of your device (eg fingerprint or pin).
Keep these things in mind
- Add passki to your gmail account.
- Use Google Authenticator or device-based verification instead of SMS.
- Google is slowly moving towards removing passwords.
- Use Google Prompt, it is safe and easy.
- Google never contacts the user directly with any safety problem.
