The government has taken strict steps to eliminate the telecom fraud. According to the information received on Friday, more than 3.4 crore mobile phones have been disconnected so far through Sanchar Saathi portal. At the same time, 3.19 lakh IMEI numbers have been blocked. The Department of Telecommunications (DOT) has also discontinued 16.97 lakh WhatsApp accounts with the help of AI and Big Data. Minister of State for Communications and Rural Development Dr. Pammasani Chandra Shekhar told the Rajya Sabha that under the Sanchar Saathi initiative, more than 20,000 bulk SMS sending SMS has been blacklisted.

People on Sanchar Saathi portal can report suspicious fraud calls or messages through Chakshu facility. But DOT instead of taking separate action on every complaint, analyzes the data from the crowd and catchs the fraud telecom resources. This smart system targets the fraud on a large scale. The minister said that connections with fake documents are being identified with AI and Big Data. Also, DOT and telecom companies have created a system that holds internationally spoiled calls (which appear to come from Indian number) in real time.
Contribution of telecom companies
Telecom service providers blacklisted 1,150 people or institutions and disconnected more than 18.8 lakh resources. Its effect was clearly seen. In August 2024, the complaints of unregistered telemarketers (UTMs) were 1,89,419, which declined to 1,34,821 by January 2025. That is, there was a huge decrease in spam.
New TRAI rules
TRAI made changes to TccCCPR 2018 on 12 February. Now customers can complain about spam or unwanted commercial communication (UCC) for 7 days. Earlier this limit was 3 days. The time of action against those sending UCC was also reduced from 30 days to 5 days. Also, preparations have been made to stop fraud and spam rapidly by hardening the rules.
