HMPV: States advised to monitor respiratory diseases, two suspected cases reported in Nagpur


New Delhi, January 7 The central government has advised the states to be vigilant about respiratory diseases including ILI and SARI. The government asked the states to create more awareness among people to prevent the transmission (spread) of airborne human metapneumovirus (HMPV). Five cases of this virus infection have been reported in India. Meanwhile, two suspected cases of the virus have been reported in Nagpur, Maharashtra. The senior official said that the concerned patients have been discharged after treatment. The official said that their samples have been sent to AIIMS Nagpur and National Institute of Virology in Pune for testing.

The first cases of HMPV were reported in India on Monday when five children tested positive for the virus in Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Gujarat. Union Home Minister JP Nadda said the other day that there is no need to panic as the government is closely monitoring the situation. Union Home Secretary Punya Salila Srivastava on Monday held a virtual meeting with states and Union Territories and asked them to monitor respiratory diseases and HMPV cases and take necessary health measures. The meeting was held at a time when there are reports of a rapid increase in the number of HMPV cases in China. -News-Patiala
