Podcasting is opening the doors to a new and exciting world for today’s youth. But does this path really guarantee money and fame? If you think yes, then you don’t know it well enough. The story of Ravi Handa, an alumnus of IIT Kharagpur and founder of ‘Handa Education Services’ gives you a real picture of this world. Ravi has delivered a message highlighting the bitter truth and financial struggles of podcasting.
The growing craze of podcasting is attracting the youth. But Ravi Handa, an alumnus of IIT Kharagpur and founder of ‘Handa Education Services’, has shown the true face of this medium through his thinking and experience. Sharing his personal experience in a social media post, Ravi said that it is almost impossible to get financial benefits from podcasting. He wrote, “Making money from podcasting is hard. I tried many methods, but none of them worked.”
Three problems related to podcasting
Ravi mentions the three biggest struggles of making money from podcasting. Number one is the difficulty of News-Patiala and sponsorship. The money from News-Patiala and sponsorship from the platforms is negligible. Finding sponsors for each episode is even harder than inviting guests. Another problem is taking money from the guest. Asking guests for money is considered a violation of ethics and policies. While they may have benefited from the podcast, this model didn’t work either. A third important problem is the preferences of brands. Most brands prefer to host podcasts by their own founders or marketing heads. He believes that hosting does not require any special skills.
Podcasting: Only 1% are successful
Ravi said that most people’s dream of making money or fame from podcasting will not come true. “If you’re looking at podcasting as a means of making money and fame, it’s not going to work for 99% of people,” he said.
However, Ravi’s purpose of podcasting is not to make money. He sees it as a means of personal enjoyment and connecting with new people. His podcast Desi Fire Podcast is the result of his passion. He said that his annual income from podcasting is less than Rs 2 lakh. “Some friends think I’m making a lot of money out of it,” he joked. Even my financial advisor was shocked when he learned the truth.”
Ravi cautions fresh graduates, MBA students and youngsters not to look at podcasting as a side hustle or career option. “Podcasting is a good experience, but avoid thinking of it as a career,” he said.
