S-500 Air Defence System: The air defense system has become the most important part of the security of any country amidst today’s changing war policy and modern threats. Russia’s S-400 ‘Triumf’ system is considered to be the most popular air defense system in the world, which India has also bought for its security. But now Russia has developed even more advanced and deadly S-500 Prometey Air Defense System which is being called “Next Generation Missile Defense System”. In such a situation, this question arises, is the S-500 actually better than the S-400? And do India need it?
S-400 vs S-500
The S-400 Triumf, which is capable of killing the enemy fighter jets, cruise missiles and ballistic missiles in the 400 km range, remains the first choice of many countries including India. This system can simultaneously track 36 targets and launch 72 missiles.
At the same time, S-500 Prometey has been designed by Russia especially for high-altitude intercept and hypersonic missile threats. Its firepower is up to 600 km and it can intercept target up to a height of 200 km. Its specialty is that it can also target satellites and hypersonic weapons coming from space, which cannot do S-400.
Why is S-500 more dangerous?
The S-500 can not only prevent fighter aircraft and cruise missiles but it is also capable of killing the Intercontinental Ballistic Missile (ICBM) and the satellite present in the low Earth orbit (LEO). It contains AESA radar, multi -layer tracking system and advanced electronic warfare support which makes it conform to the future war strategy.
Why can India need?
India is already surrounded by two nuclear power countries like China and Pakistan and now military cooperation between the two countries is also increasing. China has already gained an edge in hypersonic missile technology. In such a situation, India may have an air defense system like S-500 which can respond to both hypersonic and ballistic dangers.
Apart from this, India is also becoming aware of the safety of its space resources. Given Chandrayaan, Gaganyaan and other satellite projects, the anti-satellite capacity of S-500 can be beneficial for India.
