The International Cricket Council (ICC) will have a four -day Annual General Meeting (AGM) in Singapore on Thursday. It will talk about 2 tier test system, expansion of T20 World Cup and approval of new members.

The meeting will feature ICC chairman Jai Shah and the new CEO Sanjog Gupta. The 2025-27 World Test Championship has started. Hence the 2 -tier test system is likely to be implemented after 2027. Cricket Australia and England Cricket Board are big supporters of this system.

What is 2 Tier Test System?

The ICC is preparing to divide the Test teams into 2 divisions. A division will have big teams like India, Australia, England. The ICC plan is to play more series among the big teams. If this scheme is approved, it will be implemented after 2027. Schedules up to 2027 are already fixed.

The concept of 2 tier systems in Test cricket was introduced in 2016. However, it was refused due to opposition from several countries. The opposition countries argue that this will give their teams less opportunities to play Test matches. The protesting countries also got India’s support.

Why are it implemented now?

Last year, the 5-match Border-Gavaskar Trophy played between Australia and India saw a huge crowd. Apart from fans, a large number of fans on broadcasting and live streaming also joined this series. BGT is the fourth most viewed series in Australia so far. Fans have seen more than 8 lakh matches of this series.

Proposal to make team from 20 to 24 in T20 World Cup

In the T20 World Cup, a proposal to increase the number of teams from 20 to 24 will also be proposed. However, no final decision on this will be taken before next year. Italy’s qualification and cricket return to the Olympics (2028 Los Angeles), strengthening the thinking of this expansion.

In addition, the ICC can also finalize the investigation report of the expenses incurred in the 2024 T20 World Cup. Former CEO Jeff Allaredis resigned in January due to disturbances of expenses in this tournament.
