On 6 May, Germany’s Conservative Leader Frederick Merge became the new Chancellor of the country.
The 69 -year -old Merge won in the second round of voting in the German Parliament.
- In the first round, he had to face a historic defeat.
- In the first round, he needed a majority of 316 votes out of 630, while only 310 votes were received.
- In this way, he has become the first Chancellor to lose in the first round of voting after World War II.
- Frederick got 325 votes in the second round of voting.

1. 5 new IITs expansion received union cabinet approval On May 7, the Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi approved the expansion of 5 new IITs academic and infrastructure capacity. These 5 new IITs have been established in Andhra Pradesh (IIT Tirupati), Kerala (IIT Palakkad), Chhattisgarh (IIT Bhilai), Jammu and Kashmir (IIT Jammu), Karnataka (IIT Dharwad) states/union territories.
A total of Rs 11,828.79 crore will be spent in 4 years from 2025-26 to 2028-29 in the expansion of 5 new IITs.
The cabinet has also approved the creation of 130 faculty posts of Professor Level (Level-14 and above) in these IITs. In addition, 5 new modern research parks will also be set up to strengthen cooperation between industry and academic world.
In these IITs, the number of students will be increased by more than 6,500 in the next 4 years. This will include an increase of 1364 students in the first year, 1738 students in the second year, 1767 students in the third year and 1,707 students in the fourth year. These will be increased by combining graduation (UG), Post Graduate (PG) and PhD programs.
2. ITIS upgradation and approval for establishing 5 new National Excellence Center On May 7, the Union Cabinet approved the national plan for the establishment of 5 new National Excellence Centers (National Center of Excellence) for upgradation and skilling of ITI.
The National Plan of ITIS and the establishment of 5 national excellence centers will be implemented as centrally sponsored scheme as per the announcement made in Budget 2024-25 and Budget 2025-26.
A total of Rs 60,000 crore will be spent on this scheme, out of which the central government will contribute Rs 30,000 crore, the share of the state governments Rs 20,000 crore and the contribution of the industry will be Rs 10,000 crore.
The scheme will be focused on upgradation of 1,000 government ITI institutions, in which they will be set up in updated trade (courses) and hub and spoke models. Along with this, the capacity of 5 National Skill Training Institutes (NSTIS) and 5 National Excellence Centers will be established in these institutions.
