The 10th Nora Richards Theater Festival organized by Sarthak Rangmanch and Social Welfare Society Patiala in Punjabi University was inaugurated by famous playwright Prof. Written by Ajmer Aulakh and Dr. Happened with the play ‘Toomman’ directed by Lakha Lahiri. Director of the festival Dr. Inderjit Goldie, Norah Richards and Prof. Ajmer Singh Aulakh’s great contribution to Punjabi literature and theater was highlighted. The play ‘Toomman’ is based on the death of Kehar Singh, a famous folk tale of the Malwa region of Punjab. The main character in the play, Kehar Singh, is an innocent, intelligent son of his parents. In rural Punjab, landless and working class people who worked as farm helpers faced difficulties in getting marriage proposals. Sometimes there is a match that does not end in a successful relationship with the husband or wife. The same thing happened to Kehar Singh in the story of the play. He married a woman who was bought by his parents with money. Usually such relationships don’t last long but Kehar Singh and his wife fall in love. After some time, Ram Kaur’s parents take her home on the pretext of her mother’s illness. When Kehar Singh went to his father-in-law to bring the wife back, the mother-in-law and brother-in-law beat him up and demanded more money and jewelery in exchange for the wife. Despondent Kehar Singh joins the army and years later he goes back to get his wife back from her in-laws in exchange for his savings. Her in-laws kill her in the greed of money. At the end of the play, Kehar Singh’s wife Ram Kaur fights for her husband’s love and justice and gets punished. In the play, Damanpreet Singh played Kehar Singh, Kamal Nazam played Rami, Fateh Sohi played Kehar’s father and mother-in-law, Bhupinder Kaur played mother, Uttam Daral played Ginder and Buta, Gurdit Pahesh played Pakhar, Sanjeev Roy played Zaila, Siddharth Ohri played English. acted in On the first day, the face of actor Sardar Sohi was done.
