- ‘Increasing Competition Has Worsened The Mental Health Of Students’

The Supreme Court on Monday ordered a ‘National Task Force’ (NTF) to prevent problems related to mental health and suicides. The order came during a hearing on the case related to the suicide of two students studying in IIT Delhi.
Former Justice will lead NTF
- The Supreme Court said that former judge Justice S.K. Ravindra Bhat will be the chairperson of NTF.
- Apart from this, psychiatrist Dr. Alok Sarin and other experts have also been included in it.
- The court has directed the government to deposit ₹ 20 lakh for the initial operation of NTF within two weeks.

- ‘Universities should not only become a learning center, but also play the role of institute responsible for the welfare and development of students.’
- ‘If they fail to do so, then the real purpose of education, ie life empowering, competent and converting will remain incomplete.’
- ‘The responsibility of colleges is not only to ensure the educational progress of the students but also take care of their mental health.’
- ‘Caste discrimination prevails in colleges, due to which the feeling of isolation among the students of underprivileged communities is increasing. Caste -based discrimination in college complexes is a clear violation of Article 15 of the Constitution, which restrictions discrimination on the basis of caste.
- ‘When students go away from their homes and study in colleges, universities and colleges need to play loco parentis (role of guardian). Colleges not only have to implement the rules, but also give emotional support to students in the hour of crisis.
35 students are suicide every day
Every day more than 35 students in the country are killing themselves. That is, a student of the country is committing suicide every 40 minutes. This count of student suicide is more than farmers’ suicides in the country.
The IC3 Conference and Expo 2024 were revealed in the ‘Student Suicide-N Epidemic Sweeping India Report’ released during 2024. This report is based on NCRB’s 2021 data. According to the report, in 2021, 13,089 students in the country committed suicide. At the same time, in the last 10 years, about 1 lakh students have committed suicide.
More student suicide rate than population growth
Student suicide figures in the report are very scary. In the last two decades, there is more student suicide rate than the country’s population growth rate, that is, students are doing suicide faster than the rapid youngsters’ population is increasing.
Government made these rules to prevent student suicide in India
1. Mental Healthcare Act, 2017 According to this act, a person suffering from mental disorders has every right to take treatment for this and live life with dignity.
2. Anti Ragging Majors According to the order of the Supreme Court, all the education institutions will have to register an FIR with the police on the complaint of ragging. In 2009, the University Grants Commission, ie UGC released the regulation to prevent ragging incidents at Higher Education Institutes.
3. Student Counseling System In 2016, UGC asked universities to set up students counseling system to set up students counseling systems to solve problems like students’ examination, stress, homesicness, fear of failure.
4. Gatekeepers Training for Suicide Prevention Boy Nimhans, Spif Nimhans i.e. National Institute of Mental Health and Neuroscience and Spif i.e. Suicide Prevention India Foundation conducts this training. Through this, a network of gatekeepers is prepared which can identify the suicide people.
5. NEP 2020 Pay attention to teachers’ social-emotional learning and community involvement in school systems. Also, schools should also have social workers and counselors.
70% of teachers consider mental health not disease weakness
- 83% of youngsters in the world believe that mental health should take help from someone else for problems. At the same time, only 41% of Youngsters in India believe so.
- A study done on 566 schools in South India revealed that 70% of the teachers consider depression as sign of weeks instead of disease. Also, teachers consider it not dangerous but unpredictable.
