1. Defense Minister Rajnath Singh meets Defense Minister of Maldives: A bilateral meeting was held between Maldives Defense Minister Mohammed Ghassan Maumoon and Union Defense Minister Rajnath Singh, who was on a 3-day visit to India from 8 to 10 January.

  • During this, issues like providing arms and other defense equipment to the Maldivian Army, joint military exercises and defense projects were discussed between the two Defense Ministers. During his stay in India, Ghassan will also visit Goa and Mumbai.
  • Muhammad Muizzu, considered pro-China, became the President of Maldives in November 2023. A year after becoming President, Muizzu visited India and said that relations with India were important for Maldives.

2. Indian warship INS Tushil makes first port visit: INS Tushil, the newest guided missile warship of the Indian Navy, completed her first port visit on 7 January.

INS Tusheel, docked at Dakar port, is India’s latest guided missile warship.

  • INS Tusheel reached Dakar port in West African country Senegal and stayed in Dakar for 3 days.
  • When the ship reached Dakar, it was welcomed by the 150 Indians present there. A joint yoga session was also organised.
  • During this period, the ship also conducted a passage exercise with Senegalese Navy ship PHM Niani.

3. Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnav released the Government of India’s calendar of 2025: Union Information and Broadcasting and Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnav has released the Government of India’s calendar with the theme ‘Public Welfare through Public Participation’ on January 7.

  • The motto at the beginning of the calendar is ‘Sarvesham Mangalam Bhuyat’, meaning ‘Welfare of all’
  • Published in 13 languages, this calendar tells about the programs, schemes and achievements of the Central Government throughout the year.
  • In this calendar from January to December, themes like cleanliness, exercise etc. have been given for every month.
  • Days like Tribal Pride Day and Unity Day have been specially mentioned in the calendar.
  • Every year the government distributes its annual calendar up to the level of Gram Panchayat.

4. Green Mahakumbh will be held in Prayagraj on 31st January: Green Mahakumbh will be organized on January 31 during the Kumbh festival in Prayagraj.

Swachhta Rath Yatra was taken out in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh to keep the Kumbh city established for Kumbh clean.

  • More than 1000 environment and water conservation workers will be involved in this.
  • It will be organized by Shiksha Sanskriti Utthan Trust.
  • Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath will be its chief patron.
  • In the Green Mahakumbh, there will be a national level meeting on issues of nature, environment, water and cleanliness.

5. Trump offers to merge Canada with US: On January 6, Canadian PM Justin Trudeau resigned. After this Trump released a map showing Canada as part of the USA.

  • For this, he had talked about imposing economic sanctions on Canada instead of military action. Trudeau had opposed his statement.
  • Now Trump has released a new map of USA on social media. It shows Canada as the 51st state of the USA.

6. CAT Jammu disposed of record 15,537 cases in 4 years: The Jammu branch of the Central Administrative Tribunal (CAT) has disposed of a record 15,537 cases.

  • Union Minister of State for Science and Technology (Independent Charge) Jitendra Singh revealed these figures after a meeting with CAT Chairman Justice Ranjit More.
  • On June 8, 2020, CAT was started with a division bench in Jammu during Corona. The Central Government increased its bench by one more on January 10, 2023. Both these benches have two judicial members and two administrative members.
  • 11,792 cases pending in Jammu and Kashmir High Court were transferred to CAT. Of these, 9,275 cases and 6,262 of the new 8,745 cases initiated in CAT have been disposed of.

7. India Open Badminton Tournament from January 14: The India Open Super 750 badminton tournament will be played at the KD Jadhav Indoor Hall of Indira Gandhi Stadium, New Delhi from January 14.

Lakshya Sen and PV Sindhu will lead the team of Indian players.

  • This time India will field a team of 20 players in the tournament. Last season, 14 players from India participated in this tournament.
  • Lakshya Sen and PV Sindhu will lead the Indian contingent. Chirag Shetty and Satwiksairaj Rankireddy will lead the Indian team in men’s doubles.

  • The first ODI will be played on 10 January. The remaining 2 matches will be played on 12 and 15 January.

  • India had recently defeated West Indies in the ODI and T-20 series.

9. Women’s Premier League will be held in Lucknow and Baroda: BCCI has finalized 2 venues for the third season of the Women’s Premier League (WPL).

Captains of all 5 teams with the WPL trophy. Royal Challengers Bangalore is the champion of WPL Season-2.

  • All matches will be played between 5 teams in Baroda and Lucknow. The tournament may start from 6th or 7th February.
  • Second phase matches will be held in Baroda, which also includes qualifiers and finals.
  • BCCI has informed Uttar Pradesh Cricket Association (UPCA) and Baroda Cricket Association (BCA) about holding the matches on their grounds.
