Williamson last played a T20I match in last year’s T20 World Cup.
35-year-old Kane Williamson has announced his retirement from T20 International cricket, but he will continue playing in Test and ODI formats.
He said that now his focus will be on Test cricket and his family. Williamson will return from the three-match Test series against West Indies in December.
Williamson last played in the 2024 T20 World Cup Williamson last played a T20I match in last year’s T20 World Cup. He made his debut for New Zealand in this format in 2011 and represented the country in a total of 93 T20I matches, of which he captained in 75 matches.
“This is something I’ve been a part of for a long time and I’m very grateful for those memories and experiences,” Williamson said in an NZC statement. This is the right time for me and the team. This will give clarity to the team for the series ahead and their next big focus, i.e. T20 World Cup. There is a lot of talent in the team and it will be important to bring these players forward and prepare them for the World Cup. ,
Second highest run scorer for New Zealand in T20 Williamson is the second highest run scorer for New Zealand in the T20 format. He scored 2,575 runs and averaged 33.44. Ahead of him in this list is Martin Guptill, who scored 3,531 runs.
Under Williamson’s captaincy, New Zealand reached the semi-finals twice and the final once. Williamson captained New Zealand in 75 matches, of which the Black Caps won 39 matches. He led the team in the 2016 and 2022 T20 World Cup semi-finals and the final of the 2021 World Cup, where the team faced defeat.
The coach justified the decision New Zealand coach Rob Walter said that Williamson brought not only performance but also experience and guidance to the team. He said that this decision is wise as per the present situation. Williamson had already handed over the T20 captaincy to Mitchell Santon and his No. 3 position is now being taken by Rachin Ravindra.
New Zealand Cricket said – with every decision he takes NZC CEO Scott Weenink said: ‘We have made it clear to Ken that we have our full support as he concludes his illustrious career. We would certainly like to see him play as long as possible, but there will no doubt be whenever he decides to retire. Kane Williamson will always be remembered as one of the greats of New Zealand cricket. ,
