Jumped Deposit Scam: UPI (Unified Payment Interface) has become the easiest and popular method of digital payment in India. But along with its convenience, threats are also increasing. Cyber criminals are constantly cheating people in new ways and now a new jumped deposit scam is spreading rapidly. If you put a UPI PIN in a little carelessness, then your entire account can be empty.
What is a jumped deposit scam and how is this fraud?
In this scam, the thugs first transfer a small amount like 200 or 300 rupees to your account. Seeing this, you think that this is someone else’s wrong transaction. After this, the scammer contacts you and says that the money has come by mistake and now return them.
During this time, they send you Collect request or use any fake link/QR code. As soon as you put your UPI PIN with panic, you are not actually not returning the money, but is sending money to the thug’s account from your own account.
Why do people get caught in this trap?
Trust to make trust: The scammer assures you by putting money first that they are the real users.
Psychological pressure: They create nervousness by saying things like “accidentally send money, return it immediately”.
Curiosity and haste: Suddenly, due to the arrival of money in the account, people panic and put UPI PIN without thinking.
Misunderstanding: Many users assume that inserting UPI PIN only leads to balance check, while in reality it authorizes payment.
Scams techniques
Fake Collect request: Sending Rs 200–300 and later adding a request of Rs 2000–3000.
Sending QR code or link: Transfer money as soon as scan or click.
Emotional stories: To make a hasty decision with stories like “accidentally sent more money”, “Emergency Hai”.
Remote Access Trojan (RATS): In some cases the thugs install such malware in the victim’s mobile so that they can see the screen and transact secretly.
