NHRC chairperson Kharge and Rahul attended the meeting regarding the election of the new chairperson of the National Human Rights Commission


New Delhi, December 18

A committee chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a meeting today to select the next chairperson of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC). Sources gave this information. He also said that Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge and party leader Rahul Gandhi joined the Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha as Leaders of Opposition respectively.

The post of NHRC Chairperson has been lying vacant since Justice (retd) Arun Kumar Mishra’s tenure ended on June 1. Justice Misra, a former Supreme Court judge, served as the eighth Chairperson of the Human Rights Commission and was appointed to its top post in June 2021.

According to the law governing the NHRC, the committee to select the Chairperson of the Commission is chaired by the Prime Minister, and includes the Speaker, the Home Minister, the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, the Leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha and members of the Rajya Sabha. The vice-chairman is its member. NHRC member Vijaya Bharti Sayani became its acting chairperson after Justice Mishra stepped down. -News-Patiala
