Notice of High Court on the petition regarding plantation in the Supreme Court expansion project

The High Court took action on the intervention petition regarding the planting of 26 saplings within the premises of the Supreme Court

New Delhi, January 25

The Delhi High Court has issued a notice under an intervention application (IA) seeking permission to plant 26 saplings within the premises of the Supreme Court (Supreme Court of India). These saplings/trees are part of the ongoing project to expand the Supreme Court building, which aims to build additional courts, including the Constitutional Court, as well as new chambers for judges and enhanced facilities for lawyers and litigants.

The bench of Justice Jasmeet Singh before the Delhi High Court in Zere Ghor Bhavreen Kandhari v. Cd. Singh & others (Bhavreen Kandhari vs. CD Singh & Ors.) sought a reply in the fresh intervention application of the respondents. The next hearing of this case has been fixed on January 31.

In the intervention application (IA) filed by advocate Sudhir Mishra, it has been contended that during the marking of the layout plan, it was found that around 61 trees have fallen within the building and excavation lines of the proposed expansion area which is about 2.03 acres. . Efforts have been made to reduce the number of saplings/trees planted in order to minimize its impact on the environment.

Initially the number was 61, which was reduced to 47 and finally the final number was 26, while 35 trees were successfully saved.

Advocate Sudhir Mishra emphasized that special efforts were made to save an important old banyan tree with a girth of 675 cm, which was originally in the basement plan of the building. To retain this tree, the basement layout, ramp placement and internal road design were changed. ANI
