Now Wi-Fi will tell where you are and how you are standing! Questions are standing again on privacy

Wifi: Think if a camera, a microphone or smartphone without the help of where you are in the room, how are you standing, or are running, that too through Wi-Fi signals. It does not seem less than any science fiction, but scientists of La Sapienza University of ROME of Italy have made it a reality. The name of this technique is Whofi and it can only identify the presence and identity of humans based on changes in Wi-Fi signals.

How does WHOFI work?

When Wi-Fi signals spread in a room, they collide or get into them with objects like walls, furniture and humans. Every person’s body-his size, length, trick-mold-has different effects on these signals. Whofi reads this change. It records technical aspects such as the “amplitude” and “phase” of the signals and then recognizes the pattern of the person through the neural network.

Scientists used a data set called NTU-Fi, which is considered standard for testing Wi-Fi-based identity techniques. Whofi recognized with an accuracy of up to 95.5% how the same person moves in different rooms.

Camera-Microphone not, yet tracking possible

The specialty of this technique is that it neither takes pictures nor records the voice. With this, it can be considered more “privacy-friendly”. But the danger is not completely averted. Because from this system, the presence or movement of someone can be tracked without any knowledge, it raises many moral questions about privacy and consensus.

Scientists say that this system does not collect anyone’s biometric data or direct personal information, but it can be used for secretly monitoring when falling in the wrong hands, such as homes, offices or public places.

What is the future of this technique?

Currently, Wi-Fi Identification Technology like WHOFI is limited to research labs only and has not been implemented at any government or commercial level. But as Wi-Fi is becoming common in every house and city, such systems can be used in smart security, health monitoring, and home automation.

Examples such as camera -free security systems in homes that can identify their people, keep an eye on the activities of the elderly or patients, such a smart home that changes light, temperature or music according to the person present there.

Is caution necessary?

Absolutely. Before implementing such techniques, it would be necessary to ensure that strict rules and laws for monitoring, data security and consent of the user are made. Whofi proves that Wi-Fi can not only be a means of running the Internet, but also a new identity system which is technically advanced but demands vigilance in terms of privacy.
