PM Modi in Chandigarh: New laws mark the end of colonial era laws: Modi

Chandigarh, December 3

PM Modi in Chandigarh: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday dedicated the nation to the successful implementation of three new criminal laws here. These laws – Indian Law Code, Indian Civil Protection Code and Indian Evidence Act – came into effect on 1 July, replacing the British-era Indian Penal Code, Code of Criminal Procedure and Indian Evidence Act respectively.

Chandigarh has become the first such administrative unit in the country where all three laws have been implemented 100 percent. Speaking on the occasion, the Prime Minister said that the new criminal laws represent a concrete step towards realizing the ideals enshrined in the Constitution for the benefit of all citizens. He said that these laws mark the end of colonial era laws.

Modi further said that the colonial era laws were the medium of atrocities and exploitation by the British when they ruled India. The purpose of those laws was to punish the Indians and keep them as slaves.
