The case went from High Court to Supreme Court
There was a long battle in Punjab regarding the elections of 5 Municipal Corporations and 43 Municipal Councils. This fight went from Punjab and Haryana High Court to the Supreme Court. In this matter, on November 11, the Supreme Court had asked the Punjab government to conduct elections in a total of 10 weeks. The apex court had ordered notification of elections in 15 days and completion of the election process in the next 8 weeks.
The order given by the Punjab and Haryana High Court on 6 November on behalf of the state government was challenged in the Supreme Court. In that order, the High Court had issued a contempt notice to the Punjab Government and ordered it to issue the election notification within 10 days.
It was also said that if he does not do so, he will be fined Rs 50,000 and a contempt case will be filed against him. At the same time, on November 21, the government had told the High Court that the election notification would be issued by November 25. After this the High Court had disposed of the case.
Demand not to hold elections during Shahidi Jod Mela
All the political parties of Punjab have demanded from the Election Commission that elections should not be held at the end of December, because Martyrdom Day falls at the end of this month. People’s religious sentiments are attached to this month. In such a situation, everything should be taken care of. A letter was also written to the Election Commission on behalf of Aam Aadmi Party in this regard.
