The Election Commission has declared a holiday in Punjab for the elections to be held on December 21 for five municipal corporations and 41 municipal councils. The Commission has declared a public holiday in all government offices under the Negotiable Instruments Act 1881, wherever elections are being held.

Government employees and other workers, who are voters of municipal corporations but work at some other place, will be given special leave as per rules. Holiday has also been declared in schools whose buildings are being used for elections.

Dry day also announced

Apart from this, 21st December 2024 has been declared as ‘Close Day’ in the municipal election areas under the Punjab Shops and Commercial Establishments Act, 1958 and Factory Act 1948, so that the shops, factories and business establishments located in these areas can close. Employees can cast their votes. December 21 has been declared as a “dry day” in the jurisdictions of municipal corporations where elections are being held.

Three universities postponed papers

Guru Nanak Dev University Amritsar, Punjabi University Patiala and Panjab University Chandigarh have informed that they have postponed all the annual and semester examinations scheduled to be held on December 21, 2024, to some other date. Students who were going to appear in various examinations on these dates can check the website of the concerned university for information about the new dates.
