The slain students were studying MBBS first year at Vandanam Government Medical College here. On Monday night, the car in which they were returning after sightseeing collided with a Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) bus. Six other persons were seriously injured in the accident. The deceased have been identified as Muhammad Abdul Jabbar of Kannur, Muhammad Ibrahim of Lakshadweep, Devanandan of Malpuram, Ayush Shaji of Alappuzha and Srideep of Palakkad.
In the CCTV visuals aired by TV channels, it can be seen that the speeding car skids and collides with the bus and is crushed under the bus. It was also raining at this time. Local people said that three students died on the spot and others succumbed to their injuries after reaching the hospital. The police said that due to the terrible collision, the car was completely destroyed and the youth could be taken out only after breaking the vehicle. He said that the passengers in the bus suffered minor injuries.
An eyewitness said that even hours after the accident, the screams of the victims calling for help were heartbreaking. “It is still not clear why the accident took place,” he told TV channels. The car driver may have faced some problem due to continuous rain.”
Meanwhile, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan expressed grief over the death of the students and termed it as ‘the most tragic incident’. “The tragic incident on the Alappuzha National Highway at Kallarcode, where five medical students died in a road accident, is very sad,” he said. He also expressed his “deepest sympathy” with the bereaved families. -PTI
