What Do you know that wearing saree can cause cancer? We are not saying this. According to a study recently published in the well-known medical journal ‘BMJ’, wearing petticoats with very tight strings in traditional sarees can lead to the risk of skin cancer. This risk occurs due to petticoat. That’s why it is named petticoat cancer.
This study has revealed that village women are more at risk because they usually wear sarees. Due to the string of petticoat being too tight, it continuously puts pressure on the waist and friction also increases. This causes the rare skin cancer ‘Margolin’s ulcer’.
Marjolin ulcer is an aggressive and rare skin cancer. This happens due to sharp rubbing or due to non-healing wounds or scars after burning. It grows very slowly, but over time it can spread to all parts of the body, including the brain, kidneys, liver, or lungs.
so today ‘medical certificate‘I will talk about petticoat cancer. You will also learn that-
- How and why does this happen?
- What are the symptoms of petticoat cancer?
- What are its treatment and prevention measures?
What is petticoat cancer?
Too much pressure on any part of the body affects the circulation of blood there. If this pressure is applied daily then changes may occur in the skin of that area. This may cause swelling, scarring, or wounds. It can also turn into Margolin ulcer.
If this condition is caused due to tight cord of petticoat then it is called petticoat cancer.
What has come to light in the 2 cases of the study
In the first case, a 70-year-old woman developed an ulcer on the right side of her waist. Investigation revealed that he had skin cancer. The color of his skin had faded. The thin cord of her petticoat caused long-term skin damage, causing her to develop Marzolin’s ulcer.
In the second case, a 60-year-old woman wore a saree in lugda style. In this traditional saree attire, the saree is tied directly at the waist without petticoat. He also developed Marjolin’s ulcer, which later spread to his lymph nodes.
Symptoms of Petticoat Cancer
Petticoat cancer stands for rare skin cancer, Marjolin ulcer. When it develops at the place where the cord of the petticoat is tied, it is called petticoat cancer. Therefore, most of the symptoms of Marjolin ulcer are also signs of petticoat cancer.
In Marjolin ulcer, a scaly bulge usually appears on the skin before the wound develops. Due to this, itching, burning and blisters can also occur in the skin. After this, mild wounds start appearing, around which many hard lumps are formed. In most cases the color of the skin also changes.
How to recognize that petticoat cancer is developing
Dr. Vijay Singhal says that in petticoat cancer, swelling occurs due to prolonged rubbing and pressure. Its marks look like swelling caused by some injury or stumble. Usually a burning sensation is felt in these. In some cases itching may be felt. It may develop in the following ways:
Pressure Sore: When there is continuous pressure on one place due to the pulse, the skin there starts getting damaged. Pressure sores usually develop when one remains in bed for a long time and is unable to move. These lesions develop close to the bones. These wounds in the petticoat develop near the waist bones.
Chronic Venous Ulcers (wounds in the veins): Due to continuous pressure on the veins around the waist, ulcers develop in them. This type of ulcer causes pain, itching and swelling.
Ulcers (sores): It is like any common wound. In this, cracks or breaks appear on the upper surface of the skin.
Scars: In this, initially tissue growth is seen on the skin. Its marks look exactly like the marks that appear after an injury heals.
If something like this is being felt instead of tying the nada, then it needs to be investigated.
How is petticoat cancer diagnosed?
To diagnose petticoat ulcers, the doctor may first ask about the medical history and the reason for the ulcer. If they feel there is a risk of cancer then they can do the following tests.
Biopsy: The damaged part of the skin can be sent for biopsy. In this, the damaged skin areas around the waist are removed and sent to the lab for evaluation.
MRI या CT-SCAN: If the lab test confirms that it is Marjolin ulcer, then the next test is done to find out to what extent the cancer has spread in the body. For this, the doctor may ask for MRI or CT-SCAN test.
What is the treatment for petticoat cancer?
In case of petticoat cancer, Mohs surgery is usually done. In this, doctors remove cancer cells from the skin by performing surgery. This surgery is done in several stages. After every surgery the doctor examines the skin. If they find cancerous cells then they do surgery again. This process continues until the cancer cells are destroyed.
After surgery, the doctor may recommend covering the part of the damaged cells with a skin graft. Along with this, the following treatments can also be advised:
Chemotherapy: Chemotherapy is a type of drug treatment. In this, powerful chemicals are used to kill the rapidly growing and dividing cells inside the body.
Radiation Therapy: This is a special therapy given to cancer patients. In this, rays of intense energy are used to kill cancer cells.
Amputation: In this, the infected organ is removed through surgery.
What are the measures to prevent petticoat cancer?
Petticoat cancer does not only mean that it will happen to women who wear petticoats. This is Marjolin ulcer, which can develop in the skin of any part of the body.
The way to prevent this is –
- Whatever clothes we are wearing, their belts, belts or elastic rubber should not be too tight.
- Do not wear jeans or pants that are too tight at the waist.
- Whatever clothes we wear, it should be tied lightly at the waist so that there is no pressure on the skin.
Apart from this, one should never wear very tight clothes. Especially undergarments should not be at all tight.
If there is a wound on the waist for a long time then consult a doctor. If any change in skin color is visible or lump is felt then it is important to consult a doctor.
