Google Warning to Gmail Users: Google has issued a serious warning related to cyber attacks to 2.5 billion Gmail users from around the world. The company has appealed to users to update the password immediately and turn on two-step verification (2SV). Recently, there has been a fast in cases of hacking, due to which Google has emphasized on strengthening security measures.
Shinyhunters group cyber attacks
According to media reports, a hacking group called Shinyhunters which is inspired by Pokémon franchise is active since 2020. This group is associated with data breech on big companies like AT & T, Microsoft, Santander and Ticketmaster. The most common method of these hackers is to send fishing emails through which they take users to fake login page and steal sensitive information like password or 2SV code.
Increasing danger of data leak
Although a large part of the leaked data in this incident was already present in the public, Google has warned that such attacks can be more dangerous in the future. Google wrote on its blog in June that Shinyhunters are now preparing to launch their “data leak site (DLS)” which can increase the cases of extortion.
Google advice to users
On August 8, Google sent email to potentially affected users and advised to strengthen the account security. Google says that by turning on two-step verification (2SV), the account security increases manifold. After entering the password in it, one has to enter another step which comes on your registered device. In this way, even if the password is hacked, the hackers will not be able to enter the account.
Why is 2SV necessary
Mirror US and Action Fraud have also emphasized the importance of 2SV. He says that this is the easiest and effective way to keep the email account safe. Stop Think Fraud website says 2SV adds an additional security layer to your account. It takes only a few minutes to turn on, but it protects against fraud for a long time. You can turn it on by going to the security settings of the account. This feature is not only available in Gmail, but also in banking, social media and other online services.
