Gill fulfills his father’s dream of becoming a cricketer
Shubman Gill’s father Lakhwinder Singh is a farmer and wanted to become a cricketer. Shubman was also interested in cricket since childhood and started training in cricket at the age of three.
Shubman’s father recognized the son’s skills and decided to train him himself. He would throw 500 to 700 balls at Shubman every day. In 2007, the father shifted to Mohali with the whole family so that there was no shortage in Shubman Gill’s training. There is a Punjab Cricket Association Stadium in Mohali.
Shubman’s father has told in an interview that Shubman used to wake up at 3.30 am for cricket coaching and reached the academy at 4 am. He used to practice throughout the day and stood in the evening and looked at the session of senior players.
BCCI also received the Best Junior Cricketer Award
Shubman played almost every age group cricket. In 2014, he scored a brilliant 351 runs in Punjab’s Under-16 Inter District Tournament. At the same time, along with batsman Nirmal Singh, he also had a record partnership of 587 for Punjab in Under-16.
He scored a double century in the Vijay Merchant Trophy on Under-16 debut for Punjab. He also received BCCI’s Best Junior Cricketer Award in the years 2013-14 and 2014-15 due to such an unmatched performance.
Shubman Gill was adjudged ‘Player of the Tournament’ in the 2018 Under -19 World Cup.
In the year 2018, Team India became the Under-19 World Champion in New Zealand. The coach of that team was veteran Rahul Dravid, captaincy was done by Prithvi Shaw, and the vice-captain of the team was Shubman Gill. Shubman had scored 372 runs in 6 World Cup and played an important role in making India champions. However, in the final match against Australia, Manjot Kalra scored an innings of 101 runs and was the man of the match.
