Finally today the day has come when the Women’s ODI World Cup will get a new champion after 25 years. The final of the tournament will be played today between India and South Africa. Both the teams could never win the trophy. The match will start at 3:00 pm at DY Patil Stadium, Mumbai. The toss will take place at 2:30 pm.
The last new champion of the Women’s ODI World Cup was in 2000, when New Zealand defeated Australia in the final. Not only this, for the first time in the 52-year history of the tournament, the teams of England and Australia are not even a part of the final. Australia also became champion 7 times and England champion 4 times.
India Women’s team has made it to the final of the ODI World Cup for the third time and South Africa for the first time. Both are waiting for their first ICC title in any format. Both the teams could never even win the T-20 World Cup.
On Saturday, Indian captain Harmanpreet Kaur and South African captain Laura Wolvaardt had a photo shoot with the trophy. ICC shared the photo on social media.
Not England or Australia in the final for the first time
This will be the first time in the history of the Women’s ODI World Cup that neither England nor Australia will play the final. The first Women’s ODI World Cup took place in 1973, two years before the men’s tournament, which was won by England. There have been 12 editions of the Women’s World Cup so far and this is the 13th. This is the first time that there will be no teams from England or Australia in the final.
Both teams will meet in the final for the first time
In the semi-finals, India defeated 7-time champion Australia by 5 wickets. At the same time, South Africa had defeated 4-time winner England. Both the teams will meet for the first time in the final of any Women’s World Cup. Both the teams had also clashed in the league stage of the tournament, when South Africa had won a close match by 3 wickets.
India’s record bad in the final
India got a place in the title match of ODI World Cup for the third time. India faced Australia in the 2005 World Cup played in South Africa. Australia had scored 215 runs. The Indian team, which set out to achieve the target of 216 runs, was all out for 117 runs in 46 overs. The team had missed out on winning the title by losing by 98 runs.
The 2017 World Cup was played in England. India’s final match was against England. England batted first and scored 228 runs. Chasing the target of 229 runs, the Indian team was all out for 219 runs in 48.4 overs and lost the chance of winning the World Cup by a close margin of 9 runs.
India won 59% of the matches against South Africa
Team India is ahead of South Africa in ODI records. Both have played 34 ODIs so far, India won 20 and South Africa won 13. One match also remained inconclusive. Both have won 3-3 matches against each other in the ODI World Cup. Before the tournament, India had also defeated South Africa in 5 consecutive ODIs.
India’s biggest strength was its team game
Before the final, the Indian team is looking very balanced and full of confidence. Under the leadership of captain Harmanpreet Kaur, the team performed brilliantly throughout the tournament. Smriti Mandhana’s classic batting and Jemimah Rodriguez’s dynamic form have strengthened India’s top order. Harmanpreet and Deepti Sharma have batted responsibly in the middle order and have taken care of the team on many occasions. India’s biggest strength in the tournament was its team game. In every match some player or the other has stepped forward and performed.
Top scorer of Volwart Tournament
South African captain Laura Wolvaardt and all-rounder Marijan Kapp are the main players of this team. The entire team seems to depend on these two players. Wolvaardt has shown great consistency throughout the tournament, while Cap has proved useful to the team with both bat and ball. Wolvaert is the top scorer of both the tournament and the team. Players like Chloe Tryon and Tajmin Britz can also prove to be game-changers for the team.
Possible playing XI of both the teams
- India: Harmanpreet Kaur (Kaptan), Smriti Mandhana, Shefali Verma, Amanjot Kaur, Jemima Rodrigz, Richa Ghosh (Wicketki on), Deepti Sharma, Radha Yadav, Kranti Goud, Shri Charan, Renuka Singh Thakur.

For the result of the match, both the teams should get a chance to bat for at least 20 overs.
