According to the US Geological Survey (USGS) at 10:44 local time on Thursday, the earthquake struck in an offshore area about 100 km northwest of Ferndale, a town in Humboldt County in northern California with a population of more than 1,000. The tremors were felt as far south as San Francisco. San Francisco is 435 km from here. Here people felt the earth shake for a few seconds. After this there were many small earthquakes. However, there is no news of any major damage so far.
After the earthquake, the tsunami warning continued for about an hour. The warning was issued immediately after the earthquake. The warning was for coastal areas extending about 500 miles (805 km) from the shores of Monterey Bay in California to Oregon. More than 50 lakh people were at risk of tsunami.
