According to the recent report of National Crime Records Bureau i.e. NCRB, 13,892 students have committed suicide in the year 2023. This figure is the highest in the last ten years. Of the suicides in 2023, 8.1% were committed by students.
Cases of suicide of unemployed decreased in 2023
Apart from students, 14,234 unemployed people have committed suicide in the year 2023, which is 8.3% of the total suicides. There has definitely been some decline in this figure. In the year 2022, 15,783 i.e. 9.2% suicides were committed by unemployed people.
A total of 1.71 lakh people had committed suicide in the year 2023.
According to the report, children under 18 years of age are committing suicide the most due to ‘failure in exams’. Due to this, 1,303 students committed suicide. Almost the same number of people committed suicide due to unemployment.
Suicide cases increased by more than 70% in 10 years
According to the NCRB report, student suicide cases have increased by 72.9% between 2014 and 2023. Along with this, this is the third time in the last decade that the cases of student suicide have increased like this.
In 2015, cases of student suicide had increased by 900. In the year 2020, 2,100 more students committed suicide. This figure decreased slightly in 2022 but again in 2023, 848 more student suicides were recorded.
Government made these rules to prevent student suicide in India
1. Mental Healthcare Act, 2017
According to this Act, a person suffering from mental disorders has the full right to seek treatment and live life with dignity.
2. Anti Ragging Measures
As per the order of the Supreme Court, if any complaint of ragging is received, all the education institutes will have to lodge an FIR with the police. In the year 2009, the University Grants Commission (UGC) had issued a regulation to prevent incidents of ragging in higher education institutions.
3. Student Counseling System
To solve the problems of students like anxiety, stress, homesickness, fear of failure, UGC had asked universities in 2016 to set-up a student counseling system.
4. Gatekeepers Training for Suicide Prevention Boys NIMHANS, SPIF
NIMHANS i.e. National Institute of Mental Health and Neuroscience and SPIF i.e. Suicide Prevention India Foundation conduct this training. Through this, a network of gatekeepers is created who can identify suicidal people.
5. NEP 2020
Teachers focus on students’ socio-emotional learning and community involvement in the school system. Besides, there should also be social workers and counselors in schools.
‘Children are not taught to handle failure’
Psychiatrist Dr. Satyakant Trivedi, member of MP Suicide Prevention Task Force, said regarding the student suicide taking place in Kota, ‘There is no single reason for any suicide. All the children are giving the same exam. In such a situation, mixed factors are responsible for suicide. This includes genetic reasons, social reasons, peer pressure, parents’ expectations, education system.
Dr. Trivedi says that somewhere we fail to teach children how to deal with stress, rejection or failure. Today the child has started believing that his academic achievement is bigger than his existence. The child is not ready to give up preparation, ready to give up life. Society has glorified competitive exams a lot due to which the child feels that he will be complete only if he cracks an exam.
14-16 lakh students are giving some exam but there are only a few thousand seats. In such a situation, everyone knows that the number of children who are not selected in this will be more. But no one prepares children to deal with failure. Nothing will be achieved by arranging a motivation lecture in the children’s assembly, appointing a counselor or showing a movie. The entire system will have to be worked on.
Suicides increase due to copycat effect
Dr. Trivedi also called birther effect as one of the reasons behind the frequent suicides. This means copycat suicide. In this, someone’s suicide is glorified due to a particular cause. Other people suffering from the same cause may also get affected and commit suicide.
He says that this is why the promotion of suicide should be done with great sensitivity. As we write in the heading – He kept crying, no one listened, the child took his life under the pressure of studies…. In this, we left the child behind and the pressure of studies came forward. In such a situation, the child who is facing the pressure of studies will feel that wow, this is a good protection. Because of this the child may have suicidal thoughts.
