New Delhi – Australia’s legendary batsman Steve Smith has said after falling one run short of completing 10,000 career runs in the five-match Test series against India for the Border Gavaskar Trophy. He had not played on such a difficult pitch before in Sydney Cricket (SCG).
“It felt like I was tied with a chain,” said the former Australian captain after winning the Test by six wickets and winning the series 3-1. I was dismissed on a very dangerous ball. The ball rose suddenly. Maybe that’s acceptable to me (not reaching 10,000 Test runs), but it’s good that we got the result we wanted from the match.
He said, βIt was the most difficult pitch at the SCG. The ball was getting help from the seam and it was swinging a lot. I have never played on a wicket like this at the SCG before. It was difficult to bat here. I love cricket, it’s been a fun series, India is a great team. We faced some big challenges, especially from (Jasprit) Bumrah’s bowling.
Steve Smith needed 38 runs to reach the feat in Sydney but fell five runs short after being dismissed for 33 in the first innings. In the second innings he scored four runs and returned to the pavilion after being caught by Yashaswi Jaiswal off Prasidh Krishna. He missed out on 10,000 runs in Test cricket by one run.
