Former New Zealand captain Kane Williamson, who is a star of modern cricket and joins the likes of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, has retired from T20I. Williamson last played a T20 International in last year’s T20 World Cup. The good news for fans is that he will continue to play Tests and One Day Internationals. The 35-year-old Williamson made his debut in the format for New Zealand in 2011 and has represented his country in 93 T20 Internationals, captaining 75 of them.
“It’s something I’ve been a part of for a long time and I’m very grateful for those memories and experiences. It’s the right time for me and the team. It gives the team clarity for the series ahead and their next big focus, which is the T20 World Cup. There’s a lot of T20 talent, and over time it will be important to bring these players into cricket and prepare them for the World Cup,” Williamson said in a NZC statement.

Williamson would finish as New Zealand’s second highest run-scorer in the format, scoring 2,575 runs at an average of 33.44. He won 39 out of 75 matches under New Zealand captaincy and reached the semi-finals of the 2016 and 2022 T20 World Cups and the final of the 2021 edition, where Williamson and his team lost.
NZC CEO Scott Weinink said, “We have made it clear to Kane that we fully support him as he concludes his illustrious career. We would certainly like to see him play for as long as possible, but there is no doubt that whenever he decides to retire, he will be recognized as a legend in New Zealand cricket.”
