Ethical hacker and cyber security expert Ryan Montgomery has made a big disclosure about this. He told that some charging cables look absolutely normal but there is a hacking device hidden inside them. He also shared a video on his Instagram which showed how a seemingly simple charging cable could completely control his computer. He says that using someone else’s cable is a direct invitation to cyber threat.
According to Ryan, hackers have now created such advanced cables that not only charge but also transfer data. As soon as you connect such a cable to your phone or laptop, it can access your system and steal personal data. This may include sensitive information like your passwords, bank details, photos and chats. Therefore, always use your own charging cable and do not trust others’ cables.
If you want to be security conscious, experts recommend using a USB data blocker. This small device stops data transfer during charging, keeping your phone safe. However, fake data blockers are also available in the market which are important to identify. Genuine blockers have two pins while fake ones have four, so be careful while buying.
Maintain distance not only from others’ chargers but also from public charging stations. America’s investigative agency FBI has already warned that juice jacking technology can be used in free charging ports installed at places like airports, hotels and malls. With this, hackers can insert malware into your phone, lock the device or steal all your data.
Accordingly, as easy as it may seem to ask for a charger from someone or use a public charging port, it is also equally risky. A little carelessness can put your privacy, data and money at risk. Therefore, next time when the phone’s battery runs out, use the charger thoughtfully.
