Typhon Missile System: Amidst the ongoing tension in the South China Sea, the Philippines has deployed a weapon with the help of America which has blown China’s sleep, the name is Typhon Missile System. The special thing is that this missile system has not yet fired a single fire, yet it has become a big strategic headache for China. The question arises that what is this typhoon system, what is its strength and how it is shaking the regional balance despite being a ‘quiet weapon’?
What is Typhon Missile System?
Typhon is a mobile long range prohibition strike system that the US has specially designed to strengthen its presence in the Indo-Pacific sector. It has been developed by America’s Rapid Capability and Critical Technologies Office (RCCTO) and it is actually a multi-mission weapon platform that includes long distance cruise and ballistic missiles.
The Typhon system currently has two major weapons deployed, the SM-6 missile (Standard Missile-6) which can compete with the threats coming from all three directions. The second Tomahawk cruise missile that can make an accurate attack up to 1,600 km and is capable of destroying enemy command centers, radars, airbases etc.
This is advanced technology
The Typhon system is completely mobile. It is stationed on a truck and can be deployed to any area, whether it is a hill, coastal area or a dense forest. This makes it unexpected for the enemy. The state-of-the-art sensors, network-centric communication and AI-based target selection techniques make it extremely deadly. It can track enemy movement in real time and does not take time to make decisions.
Why is China upset?
The Typhon system has been deployed by the US in the Philippines, which is just in front of China’s aggressive activities in the South China Sea. This area is the same, where China is constantly increasing its military presence and is claiming the disputed islands. Typhon’s presence is a threat to China that it cannot ignore because its missiles can reach the mainland of China. The special thing is that the US has deployed it as ‘silent detection’ without any major military performance, that is, a big message has been given without shooting any bullet.
