New Orleans Accident: 15 people were killed and more than 30 were injured in an attack on Wednesday (January 1) evening during New Year celebrations in the city of New Orleans in America. According to Reuters report, the incident took place on Bourbon Street in the city’s famous French Quarter, when a car plowed into the crowd. Police confirmed that the attack was deliberate.
While sharing the information, FBI said that the name of the attacker is Shamsuddin Jabbar, who was killed in an encounter by security officials after the incident.
Officials related to the case informed that he had also fired at police personnel, after which he was killed. New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell called the incident a terrorist attack. He appealed to the citizens to stay away from the incident site. Nola Ready of the city’s emergency agency advised people to maintain distance from the scene.
Who is the attacker Shamsuddin Jabbar?
The FBI has identified the suspect in the New Orleans attack as 42-year-old American citizen Shamsuddin Jabbar. Jabbar, a real estate agent from Texas, served in the US Army as a human resources and IT specialist from 2007 to 2015. His service in the Army Reserve continued till 2020. American citizen Shamsuddin Jabbar was deployed in Afghanistan in 2009-10. At the time of retirement, he was working on the post of Sergeant.
Family and financial challenges
Jabbar has faced many personal and financial struggles in life. He married twice. In this, the second divorce took place in the year 2022. According to AP report, Jabbar had lost more than $28,000 in real estate business. Due to this, he had to face a lot of financial crisis. Jabbar’s past has also been linked to criminal cases. A case of theft was registered against him in the year 2002. After this, in the year 2005, a case was registered for driving with illegal license.
FBI found explosive device
Amidst the incident, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) found an explosive device at the scene. Officials are investigating it, although they have not shared any additional information about its nature and potential threats. The FBI also confirmed the flag associated with Islamic State in the suspect’s vehicle.
