NASA released video of a volcano erupting from Jupiter’s moon Io.
American space agency NASA has released a video of the volcanic eruption on IO, the third largest moon of Jupiter, the largest planet in the solar system. This video has been recorded by NASA from the spacecraft of its Juno mission. The video has been posted by the space agency on social media.
In this video, lava is seen coming out from the surface of the moon IO. IO is considered to be the most active volcanic moon in our solar system. There are more than 400 active volcanoes on its surface, in which eruptions occur continuously and lava comes out.
Research by NASA’s Juno mission has helped in understanding the 44-year-old mystery of volcanic activity on IO. The first photo of a volcanic eruption on Io was taken in 1979. There are many ponds here in which molten lava is present.
Scientist Galileo Galilei first discovered the moon IO.
How powerful is Io?
The volcanic lava that erupts on Jupiter’s moon IO comes from magma chambers rather than oceans of magma. According to Nature.com, its shape keeps changing due to the volcanoes erupting on its surface.
IO was first discovered by scientist Galileo Galilei in 1610. However, the volcano was discovered to be active in 1979 by scientist Linda A. Morabito had imposed it.
Scott Bolton, chief researcher of the Juno mission, said that since the discovery of Linda, scientists were curious about how lava is coming out of the surface of IO.
Scientist Linda A. Morabito was the first to detect movement on the moon Io.
How was the IO inspected?
The first image of lava erupting from a volcano on the moon Io was taken by NASA’s Voyager 1 spacecraft in 1979. The moon IO revolves around Jupiter in an elliptical orbit. Jupiter’s gravity exerts pressure on it, causing it to shrink in size.
Due to shrinkage, heat increases inside it and pressure on the internal layers increases, due to which lava is formed due to melting of rocks inside. This lava erupts on the surface in the form of a volcano.
In 2023-24, NASA’s Juno mission collected accurate data related to gravity using the Doppler method. This revealed that the magma on IO exists in chambers rather than in the ocean.
