Go to WhatsApp settings and check Linked Devices or “Linked Devices”. Many times a hacker logs in to your account from some other device, especially through WhatsApp Web. If you see any unknown device, log it out immediately.
After this, log out of WhatsApp from your phone and try logging in again; When you re-login, a verification code will be sent to your number via SMS and often the old sessions are automatically disconnected. If the hacker tries to log in again, he will need the same verification code, so this step is very important.
After this, send a report to WhatsApp support (support@whatsapp.com) and ask for help by explaining your situation. Also, filing a complaint on cyber crime portal is also very useful, in India you can file a complaint through number 1930 or through the official cyber crime website.
If you suspect that your SIM has been swapped or the mobile number has gone to someone else, then immediately contact your network operator and get the SIM blocked/recovered. Many times hackers take control from the SIM itself.
When you get your account back, immediately turn on two-step verification (2FA) and set a strong PIN. Change the passwords not only of WhatsApp but also of any service with which your WhatsApp is linked like Gmail or any social account.
Also, intensify monitoring of alerts and unauthorized transactions on bank and UPI apps. Instead of panicking, it is better to alert your close people and not pay attention to any fake money request.
Finally, understand that vigilance is the biggest security, do not click on unknown links, never give OTP to anyone and keep checking the linked devices of WhatsApp regularly. If you take immediate and cool-minded action, most of the damage can be prevented.
