Born in Peshawar, Pakistan, Bollywood superstar Vinod Khanna was given a chance to work in films by Sunil Dutt. He belonged to a very simple family. Vinod Khanna initially played the character of Villain. After his popularity increased after the film ‘Mere Apne’, he got a chance to become an actor. Gitanjali was Vinod’s first wife. The love story of both started in college. Gitanjali was born with his two sons Akshay and Rahul Khanna. Talking about Vinod Khanna’s professional life, he received the first Filmfare Award for the 1975 film ‘Hath Ki Safai’. The film Kurbani, released in 1980, brought him closer to becoming a superstar. The film became the highest grossing film of that year. In 1980-81, Vinod Khanna started competing directly to Amitabh Bachchan. During this time he was the highest fee actor. In the last days of Vinod Khanna, he worked in films like ‘Wanted’, ‘Dabangg’ and ‘Dabangg 2’. In these three films, he played the role of Salman’s father.
When Vinod Khanna could not make a comeback in Bollywood, he became a member of BJP in 1997. Even after entering politics, he was associated with acting. Vinod Khanna died of bladder cancer at the age of 71 on 27 April 2017. He was posthumously awarded the Dadasaheb Phalke Award. He also contested the Lok Sabha elections several times from Gurdaspur Punjab. During the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, he had described his total property 66.92 crore in affidavit.
