Why do cities have ‘Pur’, ‘Ganj’ or ‘Baad’ in their names?

The teacher explained that the word ‘Baad’ is from the word ‘Ab’, which is derived from ‘Abad’. ‘Aab’ means where there are rivers. The names of cities built on the banks of rivers were prefixed with ‘Baad’, such as Allahabad, Moradabad, or Ahmedabad. Also, the word ‘ganj’ is applied where there used to be a treasure. Here, ‘treasure’ refers not only to diamonds and jewels but also to the market or marketplace. For this reason, Lucknow’s famous market has been named Hazratganj and Delhi’s Daryaganj.
