Earthquake Alert: In the year 2020, Google launched a special technology android Earthquake Alert System (AEA) which had already been designed to warns smartphone users living in earthquake potential areas. Now scientists say that this technique is proving to be much cheaper and effective than traditional and expensive earthquake warning systems. Its most special thing is that it does not require a particular seismic station to work.
This system exists in 98 countries
This system is currently active in Android smartphones present in 98 countries and has so far covered about 2.5 billion people. The surprising thing is that the basis of this system is not a high -tech sensor, but there are millions of smartphones spread around the world that feel vibrations and deliver information to the server of Google.
According to a study published in the Journal recently, this Android -based system is as effective as traditional national seismic network. Researchers say that even though the accelerometers (which measure shaking) engaged in mobile phones are not very sensitive, their number is so high that they catch even the smallest shaking.
Between 2021 and 2024, the system recorded an average of 312 earthquakes in 98 countries, with intensity from 1.9 to 7.8. Surprisingly, 85% of the people who got alert through this system also experienced shaking. Of these, 36% of the people received an alert before the earthquake started, while 28% received alert during shaking and 23% after shaking.
The demo was seen in the Turkay
A video demo showed how people’s phones had already detected tremors during the 6.2 magnitude earthquake in Turkaye. In this, the location of P-Wave and S-Wave (of which S-Wave causes more damage) was shown with yellow and red circle.
What technique does it work
According to Google, this system recognizes vibration with the help of the accelerometer sensor present in the smartphone. When many phones feel vibrated together in an area, they send the data to the server of Google. The server determines these data and decides whether there is an earthquake or not. And if confirmed, then all Android users present there are immediately sent alert. As of today, this system has become the world’s largest earthquake alert network with more than two billion Android devices working as a mini-alert center.
