YouTube AI System: YouTube is going to implement a new Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) based age-assessment system in the US since August 13. Its purpose is to identify users who are under 18 years of age even if they have recorded the wrong date of birth while creating an account.
Not just on birth date, an eye on activities
While the existing system depended on the date of birth given only during the sign-up, this new model would use many types of “activity signals”. These include the type of video views, subjects discovered on the platform, and the duration of activation of the account. In this way, YouTube will be able to catch cases where minor is using adult accounts or hiding your age.
Strict restrictions on marked accounts
If the system feels that an account belongs to a person under 18 years of age, then many restrictions will be imposed on him. Personalized advertisements will be discontinued, digital wellbying features such as bedtime reminders and screen time tracking will be started, and some types of content will be bordered, especially on such videos that can be harmful. This step is part of the effort to protect children and adolescents from data collection for improper materials and targeted advertisements. Although YouTube believes that this model is not perfectly perfect. In cases where adults regularly see children’s content, they can also accidentally marked as a minor.
It is important to give evidence of age on wrong identity
If an adult accidentally marked as a minor, then age will have to be verified to remove the restriction. For this, there will be options like depositing government IDs, uploading your selfie, or giving credit card details. Although these methods confirm identity, some users may also worry about confidentiality about sharing sensitive information.
Gradually expansion worldwide
YouTube will first monitor the performance of this system in the US and then consider implementing it in other countries. The company says that before the rollout globally, it will be improved on the basis of user feedback and accuracy.
