South Africa defeated England by 7 wickets in the first ODI to take a 1-0 lead in the series. The English team was all out after scoring 131 runs to batting first at the Handingley Stadium in Leeds. South Africa achieved target by losing 3 wickets in 20.5 overs.

England lost only 2 wickets for 80 runs South Africa won the toss at the Handingl Stadium and chose bowling. England lost the wicket of Ben Docket in the third over itself. He was dismissed by scoring 5 runs, he was caught by Nandre Burger. Descended on number-3, Root then brought the team close to 50 with Jamie Smith.

Root was dismissed by 17 runs, he was caught by Lungi Angidi at the hands of wicketkeeper Ryan Reclleton. Captain Harry Brook then brought the team close to 100 with Smith. The team lost only 2 wickets for 80 runs, but then Brook was run out after scoring 12 runs.
