Rupnagar, 12 January

The operation to pave the bottom and banks of the Sirhind Canal amid the severe cold weather has heated up the political atmosphere. The work of paving the canal from the head works of Rupnagar to the newly constructed bridge is continuing on a war footing and at the same time there is strong opposition to the paving of the canal by various social organizations and political leaders. In this context, Gaurav Rana, a famous social activist of Lakha Sidhana and Nurpur Bedi area, reached Rupnagar and raised questions on the government’s action to pave the canal. He said that the officials of the departments carrying out the work of paving in the name of increasing the capacity of the canal should make it clear whether this work will weaken the water level in the arable lands and residential areas or not. He demanded from the Punjab government that the government should clarify the situation as to when the proposed Dasmesh Canal will be built and when will the people of Rupnagar constituency get water. Lalit Garg, SDO of the Canal Department, said that the bottom of the Sirhind Canal will be left with gravel for the next 600 feet from the beginning of the canal and will not be paved.

We will irrigate the lands with the surplus water being cultivated: Chadha

Rupnagar MLA Dinesh Chadha claimed on social media that 9.5 lakh acres of land will be irrigated due to the canal being paved and widened. He said that the waste water from the river was going waste on the Pakistan side, now that water will be used to irrigate the lands by increasing the capacity of the Sirhind Canal. This is a big achievement of Bhagwant Maan government.
